The last cup that never is
Optimistic to a medical degree. Home never arrives. The coffee does.
One More is always smiling, always holding a takeaway, always five minutes from heading home. The home never arrives. The coffee does. Flip-flops in winter. Tomorrow-me problem.
The last cup is a narrative device. It lets you pour without admitting you are still in the scene. 21:30 is the promise. 21:47 is the amendment. The Maximalist does not even use the word last; the night is still a beverage.
There is a kind person under the joke: the one who wants a boundary and uses a lid as a treaty. Lids lie. The second cup is already walking toward the counter while the first is still being promised.
If you mean it, put the cup down before the half-life argues. If you do not mean it, sit with One More and enjoy the streetlights. Just do not make the bakery a calendar invite.
