A field guide to café squatting
Outlet radar, pastry rent, and the corner table that became a lease.
Café Squatter moved into the corner table in March and has been paying rent in cortados ever since. The calendar is table numbers. The wifi password has not changed because changing it would be an eviction.
The last wall outlet is not infrastructure. It is a scarce resource with a glare attached. Tourists reaching for it will be briefed. Regulars already know. The pastry is a standing meeting; it proves occupancy more honestly than a laptop lid.
Remote work did not create this habitat. It just gave it Slack. The barista knows the wallpaper. The houseplant knows the Zoom voice. Closing time is announced like weather: acknowledged, not obeyed, until the chairs go up.
Etiquette, such as it is: reorder before you are hated, tip like you live there, and do not take a four-top for a spreadsheet. The Squatter’s quote is the whole lease: the rent is one well-timed pastry.
This is not a productivity hack. This is a biome. If you leave, the outlet will forget you. That is the horror. That is the joke.
